In 2016 Free Flight Academy launched a new style of guided week to assist with pilot progression. These courses have proved to be a massive success with feedback from these courses showing pilots felt they had progressed rapidly and gained significant confidence in their flying. As a result we will be offering more opportunities to sign up for this course in 2018.
Background Post CP pilot progression can be slow and whilst certain factors are very difficult to control in terms of weather or availability to fly, we believe there are elements we can change to accelerate pilot learning. Although you can have fantastic instruction from the ground and detailed theory lessons, once you take off and you’re flying solo the pressure is on. Trying to remember all the theory and put it into practice whilst actually dealing with the glider in thermic air can give a very high work load and a certain level of stress and as high stress situations are never the optimum environment in which to learn, we figured we needed to reduce those stress levels!
Course structure Our new tandem thermalling course is designed to teach pilots how to thermal using a combination of tandem and solo flying. During the tandem flights as you are not the sole pilot in control, the aim is for you to relax and watch as we demonstrate first hand where we go to search for lift and how we use the lift to climb. We will also talk through our decision making process and how to build up a mental picture of thermals and the environment, which is a key element of understanding how to make the best out of each flight. Additionally you will have the opportunity to follow through on the controls enabling us to demonstrate exactly how we pilot our glider, make efficient turns and assess if lift is good enough to turn in. Pilots considering an SIV course can additionally opt to experience some manoeuvres such as entry to spiral and wingovers on tandem in preparation for a course.
During the week there is also plenty of opportunity to fly solo to ensure you can practice and consolidate what has been learnt.
Course Size Generally guided weeks tend to have groups of at least seven or more which can greatly water down the attention each individual pilots personal flying is given. Our tandem thermalling courses will have no more than four pilots to ensure each receives individual attention and a combination of tandem and solo flights to maximise learning potential.
Location Algodonales located just an hour and half from Malaga is a paragliding mecca that both Akis and I know extensively. Both of us have lived in the village for 8+ years and combined we have thousands of hours flying on and around the local sites. Algodonales provides the perfect environment for quick progression due to the reliable conditions, XC and thermalling sites on offer.
